Why Your Scalp Health Matters More Than You Think

When we think about healthy hair, we usually focus on what we can see — shine, softness, breakage, colour and the condition of our ends.
But healthy-looking hair starts somewhere else: your scalp.
After more than 20 years working with hair, one thing I’ve learnt is that scalp care is often the missing part of a good hair routine. We spend so much time choosing shampoos, treatments and styling products, yet the skin underneath our hair can easily be forgotten.
Your scalp is skin too
Just like the skin on your face, your scalp can experience dryness, excess oil, product buildup, sensitivity and irritation.
And because it’s where every strand of hair begins, looking after your scalp should be part of looking after your hair.
Some signs your scalp might need a little more attention include:
* Dryness or flaking
* Itchiness or sensitivity
* Excess oil
* Product buildup
* A scalp that feels tight or uncomfortable
* Hair that feels weighed down at the roots
Sometimes the answer isn’t adding more products — it’s simplifying your routine and being more intentional about what you use.
Start with a simple scalp ritual
Scalp care doesn’t need to be complicated.
Regular cleansing, avoiding excessive product buildup and taking a few minutes once or twice a week to care specifically for your scalp can make a beautiful addition to your hair routine.
This is actually one of the reasons I created my Organic Rosemary Hair & Scalp Oil.

I wanted something simple that I could confidently use as part of my own hair-care ritual and recommend alongside the gentle, low-tox approach I already take in the salon.
It’s made with just three ingredients: organic jojoba oil, organic castor oil and organic rosemary essential oil.
No long ingredient list. No complicated routine.
Make scalp care part of your week
Once or twice a week, apply your scalp oil and gently massage it through the scalp using your fingertips or a scalp massage brush.
Leave it in for 30 minutes to 4 hours, then shampoo thoroughly.
Think of it as a little reset for your scalp — and a chance to slow down and give your hair some intentional care too.
Because beautiful hair isn’t only about what we do to the lengths.
It starts at the scalp.
