Postpartum Hair Loss: What Actually Works?

If you’ve recently had a baby and feel like your hair is falling out everywhere, you’re not alone.

As a hairdresser, postpartum hair loss is one of the most common concerns I hear from new mums. The good news? In most cases, it’s completely normal and temporary.

Why Does Postpartum Hair Loss Happen?

During pregnancy, higher hormone levels keep more hairs in the growth phase, often making your hair feel thicker and fuller.

After birth, those hormone levels drop and the extra hairs begin to shed. This usually starts around 2–4 months postpartum and can continue for several months.

Common signs include:

* Increased shedding in the shower

* Hair thinning around the temples

* A wider part line

* Loss of volume

What Actually Helps?

Focus on Scalp Health

Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp. Keeping the scalp clean, free from buildup and well cared for can help create the best environment for healthy hair growth.

Be Consistent

Whether you’re using a scalp treatment, scalp massage or rosemary oil, consistency is key. Hair growth takes time, and results won’t happen overnight.

Be Gentle With Your Hair

During this stage, avoid tight hairstyles, excessive heat styling and aggressive brushing. Choose gentle hair care and give your hair time to recover.

Look After Your Overall Health

If your hair loss feels excessive or continues beyond 12 months postpartum, speak with your healthcare provider. Iron levels, thyroid function, stress and nutrition can all play a role.

When Will My Hair Grow Back?

For most women, postpartum shedding peaks between 3–6 months after birth and gradually improves over the following months.

One of the first signs of recovery is often the appearance of new “baby hairs” around the hairline.
