The Weekly Hair Routine I Recommend for Healthy Hair Growth

If your hair feels dry, dull, oily quickly, or your scalp is constantly irritated, the problem usually isn’t that you need more products.
Most of the time, you just need a simpler, healthier routine.
As a Geelong hairdresser specialising in healthy hair, scalp health, and low-tox haircare, these are the weekly habits I recommend to clients wanting stronger, healthier-looking hair without overcomplicating things.
⸻
1. Oil Your Scalp Before Wash Day
Healthy hair starts with scalp health.
I recommend using a scalp oil 1–2 times per week before washing your hair to help soften build-up, nourish the scalp, and support healthier-looking hair over time.
I personally use my Organic Rosemary Hair & Scalp Oil, made with certified organic rosemary, jojoba, and castor oil.
Massage a small amount into the scalp and leave on for 30 minutes to 4 hours before washing.
I don’t recommend sleeping in scalp oil overnight, as leaving oils on too long can sometimes cause build-up or irritation for certain scalp types.
⸻
2. Shampoo Twice — Especially The Roots
One quick shampoo is usually not enough to properly cleanse the scalp.
The first wash removes build-up, oil, and dry shampoo.
The second wash actually cleans the scalp.
Focus shampoo on the roots only and rinse thoroughly.
A healthy scalp should feel clean and fresh — not coated, itchy, or heavy straight after washing.
⸻
3. Don’t Overload Your Hair With Products
One of the biggest mistakes I see is people using too many heavy products.
Too much product can leave the scalp congested and the hair feeling dull or flat.
Your routine really only needs:
* a good shampoo
* conditioner
* heat protection
* a scalp oil
* one to two styling product
Simple and consistent is usually best.
⸻
4. Reduce Heat Damage Where You Can
You don’t need to completely stop heat styling to improve your hair health.
Small changes make a big difference over time:
* lower your heat settings
* use heat protection
* avoid repeatedly straightening the same sections
* let the hair partially air dry where possible
Healthy hair is built through daily habits, not perfection.
⸻
5. Wash Your Hair Based On Your Scalp
There’s a lot of advice online saying you should “train” your hair to go longer between washes.
But not every scalp likes that.
For some people, leaving sweat, oil, dry shampoo, and build-up sitting on the scalp too long can actually make irritation worse.
Your ideal wash routine depends on:
* your scalp type
* your lifestyle
* how often you exercise
* how much product you use
Healthy hair routines are never one-size-fits-all.
⸻
Final Thoughts
The healthiest hair routines are usually the simplest ones.
Consistency, gentle products, scalp care, and realistic habits will always make more of a difference than chasing every trend online.
