Why Your Scalp Health Matters More Than You Think

Most people focus on the condition of their hair, but healthy hair actually starts with a healthy scalp.

As a hairdresser, one of the most common things I notice is that many scalp concerns go unnoticed until they begin affecting the hair itself. Whether it’s dryness, excess oil, irritation or increased hair shedding, your scalp plays a vital role in the overall health and appearance of your hair.

Your Scalp Is the Foundation for Healthy Hair

Your scalp is skin, just like the skin on your face. It needs regular cleansing, nourishment and care to create the best environment for healthy-looking hair.

When your scalp isn’t at its best, you may notice:

* Dryness or flaking

* Itching or irritation

* Oily roots

* Dull-looking hair

* Increased hair shedding

While these symptoms don’t always indicate a medical condition, they can be a sign that your scalp needs a little extra attention.

If you’re experiencing sudden or excessive hair loss, it’s always important to speak with your GP or dermatologist to rule out any underlying medical causes.

Four Simple Ways to Care for Your Scalp

1. Shampoo Your Scalp Properly

Your shampoo is designed to cleanse your scalp, not just your hair. I recommend shampooing twice to help remove oil, product build-up and impurities, leaving your scalp feeling properly clean.

2. Massage Your Scalp

Regular scalp massage can help improve circulation while turning your hair wash into a relaxing self-care ritual.

For an even better experience, use a Scalp Massage Brush to gently exfoliate the scalp, lift away build-up and evenly distribute your shampoo or scalp treatment.

3. Nourish Your Scalp

A healthy scalp needs nourishment too.

I created my Organic Rosemary Hair & Scalp Oil using Certified Organic Rosemary Essential Oil, Organic Jojoba Oil and Organic Castor Oil to support a healthy scalp as part of a weekly routine.

Apply the oil to your scalp, massage gently, leave on for 30 minutes to 4 hours, then shampoo thoroughly.

I don’t recommend leaving scalp oils on overnight.

4. Support Your Hair from the Inside Out

Stress, hormones, nutrition and overall health can all influence your scalp and hair.

Looking after your overall wellbeing, alongside a consistent hair care routine, gives your hair the best chance to look and feel its healthiest.

Looking After Your Hair Starts at the Scalp

Healthy hair isn’t about chasing the latest trend—it’s about building simple habits that support your scalp over time.

Whether you’re dealing with dryness, an oily scalp, irritation or increased shedding, looking after your scalp is one of the best things you can do for your hair.

If you’re unsure where to start, I’d love to help. During your appointment, we can chat about your scalp concerns, your current hair care routine and the products that may be best suited to your hair goals.
